Starring: James McAvoy, Daniel Radcliffe, Jessica Brown Findlay Director: Paul McGuigan Out: October 2, 2015  Period gothic horror exploring the friendship between Dr. Frankenstein (McAvoy) and his assistant Igor (Radcliffe). In the 1850s, in the midst of the industrial revolution, at the forefront of medical science, these two will inspire each other creatively and clash over the morality of what they’re doing. A radical reinterpretation of Mary Shelley’s novel, the script’s title was ‘Igor’, indicating that the main character isn’t the monster or even the Doctor. In fact the 10ft brain-damaged monster, played by a virtual unknown, is hardly involved, just one of a series of creations that goes on the rampage. Instead Radcliffe’s Igor is the main focus, a circus vet complete with hair extensions and no hunch for much of the time (it’s mostly a cyst that gets lanced early on). The director of ‘Lucky Number Slevin’ and ‘Push’ works from a screenplay by the talented Max Landis, who wrote ‘Chronicle’. McAvoy and Radcliffe should make for an interesting pairing and while this project will annoy traditionalists, it should be entertaining in a steampunk ‘Re-Animator’ way. |
