Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson Director: Ron Howard Out: March 13, 2015  Based on the real-life event from winter 1820, a New England whaling ship is preyed upon by an enormous sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. In the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic, and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their inexperienced captain (Walker, who played Lincoln in ‘Abe: Vampire Hunter’) searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate (Hemsworth) still seeks to bring the great whale down. Ben Whishaw plays novelist Herman Melville, whose experiences on board inspired him to write ‘Moby Dick’. In between dodgy Dan Brown adaptations and weak comedies, director Ron Howard makes sure-fire Oscar-calibre dramas, from ‘Rush’ and ‘Frost/Nixon’ to ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’. This seems to be more a survival story (cue: cannibalism) than a story focused on man vs whale, which is a bit of a shame, but it should be grand film-making nonetheless. |
