Starring: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher Director: J.J. Abrams Out: December 18, 2015  Continuation of the saga and the start of a new trilogy, set 30 years after ‘Return of the Jedi’. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker feature alongside a bunch of newcomers. John Boyega (‘Attack the Block’) plays a stormtrooper with a crisis of conscience, Oscar Isaac (‘Inside Llewyn Davis’) plays an x-wing pilot, near-unknown Daisy Ridley is probably the daughter of Leia and Han, while Domhnall Gleeson’s (‘About Time’) role is still unknown. Max von Sydow, Andy Serkis and Adam Driver (TV’s ‘Girls’) are villains. It’s believed that Ford, Fisher and Hamill are much more than cameos, taking center stage here, especially Ford who Deadline Hollywood say “has a gigantic role”. Their on-screen children then take center stage in the following two films. ‘Episode VII’ is directed by J.J. Abrams, who reinvigorated ‘Star Trek’, from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan (‘Empire Strikes Back’) and Abrams. John Williams returns as composer (great news). The trailer showed they have captured the aesthetic and mood of the original trilogy, so far. |

Starring: Arnie, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney, Matt Smith Director: Alan Taylor Out: July 1, 2015  Both a reboot and a continuation, this will tie together various threads from the previous films through time travel. This includes sequences from the first movie being replayed from a different perspective. A familiar event will end differently, setting off an alternative timeline. Schwarzenegger is back as a cyborg and his older appearance is explained by the human tissue having aged. The director of ‘Thor: The Dark World’ is at the helm (the producers tried hard to get Ang Lee, oddly enough). Emilia Clarke (‘Game of Thrones’) is playing Sarah Connor, the woman saved by Kyle Reese (‘Die Hard 5’s Jai Courtney). Jason Clarke (‘Dawn OTPOT Apes’) is resistance leader John Connor. Byung-hun Lee, who was menacing as Storm Shadow in the G.I.Joe movies, is a T-1000. ‘Dr Who’ star Matt Smith will be a new character with a strong connection to John Connor. Dayo Okeniyi from ‘Hunger Games’ plays Miles Dyson’s son and J.K. Simmons plays a weary alcoholic detective who has followed the bizarre case of Sarah Connor and the robots for more than three decades. Could all be genius or pretty confused. |

‘Ted’ is the highest grossing R-rated chucklefest of all time, amassing over half a billion dollars worldwide. Not surprisingly then that Walhberg is reprising his role, with MacFarlane back as writer, director and the voice of the vulgar teddy bear. While the rest of the writing team return too, Mila Kunis is out as female lead, in favour of MacFarlane’s ‘Million Ways to Die’ co-star Amanda Seyfried in a new role. Reportedly this was purely a creative decision to fit with the plotting, Kunis is expected to make an appearance. Morgan Freeman has a sizeable role as a famous civil rights lawyer who comes to Ted’s aid, while Liam Neeson has an extended cameo. Jessica Barth is back as Tami-Lynn. Patrick Warburton returns as John’s co-worker. Although ‘Million Ways’ was a misfire, ‘Family Guy’ creator MacFarlane is used to getting a long, high quality run out of a premise that works, so expect this to be perfectly entertaining for those who enjoyed the first. |
