Starring: Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson, Adam Driver, Ken Watanabe Director: Martin Scorsese Out: November 2015 Scorsese’s 17th century historical drama about two Jesuit priests (Garfield, Driver) who face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor (Neeson) and spread the gospel of Christianity. Japan, under the Tokugawa shogunate, has banned Catholicism and almost all foreign contact. They witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of their own government which wishes to purge Japan of all western influence. In time the priests separate and one travels the countryside, wondering why God remains silent while His children suffer… Based on the 1966 novel that’s been called one of the 20th century’s finest, it’s about the ethical problems of religious imperialism and Christian missionary work. It’s pro-Christian but dismisses the notion that man must suffer, which is a huge thing in Catholicism – It’s unnecessary because Christ already did the suffering for us. For devout Catholic Scorsese this has been a passion project, written way back in the 1990s with the screenwriter of ‘Gangs of New York’. A section of fans are underwhelmed by the casting (when the likes of Daniel Day Lewis was in the running at one point) but Scorsese knows what he’s doing. Expect his usual brilliance. |
